Stereotypes in Magazines

Above are some pictures of stereotypical advertisements in magazines. These images have various reasons as to why they are stereotypical. For e.g the Huggies advertisement says "Have dad put Huggies to the test" because father's do not usually want to change diapers and people think that women have to do all that work. In the picture on the bottom left is a sports magazine for men and in order to attract men to buy the magazine they put a half naked woman posing on the front cover for men to see it and want to buy it. Also in the Men's Health magazine when you look at it you can see that it is just about sex or building muscle and abs. In the top right advertisement it says "The chef does everything but cook thats what wives are for!" which means that men do not do anything in the kitchen and the women are supposed to do all the house work like the advertisement on the top right.

Explain the effects of the inclusion, exclusion,or positioning of people or groups in magazines advertisements: Inclusion, exclusion  or positioning of people or groups in magazine advertisement create or change peoples views on reality and how they think reality is. For example in the Men's Health magazine they make it seem like all men are about sex and having a good body and muscles or like in the advertisement with the woman cleaning it shows that women are only supposed to do all the cleaning and housework. Also in the Huggies Ad they make it seem like fathers never change their babies diapers.

Media messages contain ideological and value messages

This media message contains an ideological message about the role of women. The picture is a woman showing her muscles and the caption is "We can fix bikes!" because usually, you would expect a man to fix a bike and do all that kind of work and not a woman. Therefore it is showing that women can do tough work like what a man can do such as fixing a bike

Brand Identity (Roxy)

The brand I chose was Roxy.

Roxy’s brand identity is always people surfing. The image created by marketers says that it is a beach brand that sells surfboards, swimsuits, bags, shades and other things you might use when you go to the beach or pool. Ownership/consumption of the product says that the consumer goes to the beach or pool a lot, probably surfs or is in to water sports and is the more outdoors type of person.

This brand is marketed in magazines such as swimsuit magazines or sometimes sports magazines (water sports). Or it is marketed on billboards on the beach or in beach bars/restaurants and places that sell swimsuits or beach supplies.

This brand identity affects my own interest in the brand because I like going to the beach and I also like to surf therefore, it makes me think that this is the place I should go to get my swimsuits, a bag to go to the beach a surfboard and shades.  It interests me and makes me want to go there to buy things for the beach because the people in their brand identity look so good I would want to look like that as well. Sometimes, they have famous surfers advertising their brand to make it look like a quality beach brand. This brand identity is important in helping me create my own brand identity because I want to look good when I go to the beach and people see me and think that I go to the beach often and I like water sports. If I were a brand my brand identity would be people in the sea or people surfing because that is what I like and it represents what type of store I have

"Too Hot For Tv"

This snickers advertisement was not aired because it was said to be offensive to gay people. I was not offended by this commercial but i can understand why gay people would be because the man is being stereotypical by mocking how gay people walk/run. I think this clip is funny but it can be offensive to other people. No it should not have aired because gay people might have gotten offended. To make this clip more appropriate for television instead of the man walking/running like that he could have just ran or walked slowly.  Yes it is fair because it should be fair to everyone and people should not have to watch a commercial and get offended it should be appropriate for everyone.

Advertisement Reflection

                                            Advertising Reflection

What is advertisement? Advertisement is an announcement or a notice publicly promoting a product, service or event. Advertisement has a role to publicly promote a product, service or event and make it look better than it actually may be to convince the target audience to purchase the product.  Advertisers have many techniques that they use to help convince the consumer to purchase their product. Some of them are :

1.    Repetition – used for the customer to remember the product. It can be used by mentioning the product or company’s name more than once.

2.     Claims – Used by promoting specific features or by making claims about what a product or service can potentially do for the customer.
Foe.g. calling something “the best” or “better”.

3.    Association – By using a celebrity or a jingle to help promote the product.

4.    Bandwagon – Used to convince the target audience that they should join the crowd.

5.    Promotions – Used by using coupons, prizes with the purchase or “buy one get one free” to excite the customer and encourage them to buy the product.

I chose the proactive advertisement with Katy Perry as an example of Association.

Ads Vs Reality ( Key Concepts)

For my first key concept i chose Media messages that have commercial implications. In the two pictures above they are advertisements for fast food places e.g Burger King. Places like these advertise their food making it look like the burger on the left when in reality the burger actually looks like the one on the right. They do this to make society think that the burger is round , juicy and bright but when in reality the burger is unhealthy, may look very unappetizing and nothing like the one in the advertisement..They edit the picture of the burger to make us buy it thinking it will look like how it looks in the picture ( very tempting ) and taste good so that they can make money. I chose this because its something very common and most if not all fast food places do this.

For my second key concept i chose Media messages that contain ideological and value messages for e.g the role of women. Media uses women in their advertisements for their products to make it seem like its a good product to buy especially for men. Usually the women are thin, half naked with good bodies to make the picture seem seductive because thats media's perspective on 'beautiful'. In the first picture it is an ad for vodka and you can see a woman in her bikini as the main subject in the picture to make it seem like if thats what really happens when you drink the vodka. In the second picture it is an advertisement for cologne for men and as you can see their is a naked woman because they think it makes their product look good and make men want to buy it. Women are often used as trophies in advertisements to make the product look good and attract men to buy the product.

Media's Contruction Of Reality

    Josephine Camacho
Assignment: Find another example of a construction of reality in the media (ex. news article, magazine, TV show, etc). Explain how media is constructed in the piece. Explain your reaction to this piece (1-2 paragraphs, with the picture/link/item in question).

I chose Victoria’s secret models because media portrays them as perfect with perfect hair, perfect bodies and a perfect face. Media creates one type of person as beautiful. The typical standard of being beautiful by society is to have long hair , tall, nice bodies with plenty make up on. That’s the new stereotype for beauty. You never see a fat model or a plain looking model. The question is, is this really how society sees’s how the average person looks? Yes because not everyone can wear the same skimpy clothes or swimsuits as them so in reaction to this teens are becoming anorexic and vomiting out everything they just ate , covering their face with makeup and wearing tight clothes to try to resemble the “in” look or the look that is said to be fashionable which is not right.

In my opinion this is not true everyone has something beautiful about them that is different. It is not fair to say in order to be beautiful you have to be skinny with long hair and a clean pretty face because that’s not true. That can also cause problems with society. I think they should have swimsuit models that are fat and have regular fat models to so that maybe it can change the ways of what society thinks.
